Core Position Descriptions
Training at Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai hospital is a rewarding experience for any prospective AT in Neurology. We are a relatively new department located within a redeveloped hospital precinct, which was opened in 2021. Hornsby is consistently rated as amongst the best for JMO wellbeing and training. The department is staffed by 7 Neurologists with a wide range of specialty interests.

The AT will be expected to cover inpatients, consultations and stroke calls. The team is supported by a JMO and 2 neurology CNCs. We are a thrombolysis center and have access to onsite advanced stroke imaging and acute MRI. The AT will be expected to attend 1 specialty clinic per week and the TIA clinic. Stroke oncall is covered by the AT and other medical trainees. The department also operates a comprehensive Parkinson's service with access to rehabilitation, PD advanced therapies and clinics. The AT will be expected to gain a high degree of experience and confidence in the management of PD.

Weekly departmental meetings include neuroradiology, dedicated teaching and monthly journal club. All consultants participate in these meetings and The AT is expected to present on occasion. We see on average 800 admissions per year and have 10-15 admissions at ay one time.

The hospital has access to a wide range of clinical services with many of these added recently. The hospital has state of the art radiology, ED and ICU services as well as conferencing facilities. The AT has access to workspace within the neurology ward as well as library facilities.

Hornsby Hospital has close links with other training sites within the northern Sydney local health district, including the SAN and RNSH hospitals. This provides valuable networking and training opportunities for any prospective candidate. Trainees will be expected to attend hospital meetings and specialty clinics at these sites.

Hospital Information

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital underwent a major redevelopment in 2021. It now boasts modern facilities and services a population of around 300,000. We are a major metropolitan hospital and teaching site for the University of Sydney.

The Neurology department has undergone a major expansion in the last 2 years. We now provide 24/7 stroke thrombolysis and have a specialty clinics in Parkinson's and TIA. On average we see 800 admissions per year and perform 350 EEGs per year. The Parkinson's clinic commenced in 2021 and has provided over 350 episodes of care. The department has 2 neurophysiology technologists and 2 specialty CNCs in stroke and Parkinson's.

We have a modern 8 bed stroke unit within a 24 bed Neurology ward. There is onsite neurophysiology with weekly EEG teaching and offsite NCS/EMG training at the SAN hospital. The hospital boasts modern neuroimaging facilities with ready access to MRI and advanced CT perfusion.

The hospital is a very supportive environment for trainees and encourages teamwork and collegiality. We have close links with our ED colleagues and ICU and as a result have very good stoke KPIs and thrombolysis rates.

Junior Staff Positions In Neurology
1 RMO/Intern ATs are covered during protected teaching times and when offsite. This is made possible with additional JMO staffing during these times and via the stroke oncall roster.

Trainee Responsibilities
There is a strong emphasis on teamwork and learning. The AT is expected to run the ward service with the assistance of JMOs and the consultant. We have a strong emphasis on training and acquiring clinical skills. We encourage trainees to participate in teaching and pursue specialty interests. We work with them to gain access to training opportunities and to develop as a neurologist in training.

We place emphasis on clinical excellence in our trainees. We encourage trainees to seek knowledge in order to become accomplished in general & specialty neurology. We also encourage trainees to pursue clinical research and become comfortable with presenting at local and national meetings.
