Core Position Descriptions
Accredited for Neurology core training from 2014 the posts are based at The Townsville Hospital under the supervision of Dr Richard White and Dr Mike Boggild, both of whom have extensive experience of supervision of trainee Neurologists during their years of practice in the UK. Dr White in particular was previously director of training in a large UK Neuroscience centre and sat on the UK Neurology training committee.

The Department of Neurology in Townsville was re-established in 2012 with a complement of 4.1WTE Neurologists offering extensive exposure to general and sub-speciality Neurology in a regional setting.

The Neurology advanced trainee will run the Neurology in-patient service which includes a busy acute stroke unit with delivery of thrombolysis, undertake general and sub-speciality outpatient clinics (including tele-neurology) and be trained within a busy Neurophysiology department.

Hospital Information

The Townsville Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the North Queensland region covering a dispersed population of around 750,000 with a large ED and around 560 beds. Townsville itself has a population of 200,000 and James Cook University, which sits adjacent to TTH, has a medical school with an intake of around 160 students annually.

The hospital offers a full range of sub-speciality services, including Neurosurgery. Substantial expansion of the hospital is currently underway which will augment outpatient, neuro-rehabilitation and oncology facilities.

The Neurology team supervises the acute stroke unit with 8 designated stroke beds with AH/CNC support. Typically the team runs 10-15 inpatients in addition to daily admissions to the Ambulatory Care Unit. There are 3-5 ward consults/day with a similar number of ED referrals.

Trainee Responsibilities
